Basement Egress window wells come in many different shapes and designs. But all of them have several common features. When looking to purchase an egress window well, look to make sure it meets the International Residential Code (IRC) 2000.
The egress window well must have a ladder attached to the well if the window well is deeper than 44". The ladder must be permanently attached. This allows an occupant of the basement to safely climb out of the basement. The ladder can intrude up to 6" into the well. Any grates that are used to cover the egress window well must not require special tools to undo.
After the safety aspect has been met, each manufacturer has many features for different customer. Many have clear covers that will allow sunlight to enter the basement. Or, some can be purchased that have tiers in them to plant flowers. This would greatly increase the look of the basement.
Nearly all of the basement egress window wells are made of polyethylene. This material is long lasting and can come in a variety of colors. Metal egress window wells are also available.
